The California Condor is the largest land bird in North America. It's also critically endangered and nearly went extinct in the 80’s. At one point there were only 27 left in the world. Thanks to an incredible conservation effort, they are making a comeback, with a total population of about 500 today. But they are far from safe. Most die of lead poisoning from hunter’s bullets that have contaminated the carcasses they feed upon.
